RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LAW AND SPIRIT

Text:  But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we
should serve in newness of spirit, and not in
the oldness of the letter. (Rom 7:6)

Focus: A Christian lives by the Spirit of the Law

I. What Law Is
A. Expression of God's Character (Rom 7:14)
B. Eternal (Psalms 119:142)
C. Unchangeable (Heb 13:8)

II. Purpose of Law
A. Given for Our Benefit (1 Tim 1:8)
B. Convicts of Sin (Rom 3:20)
C. Teacher (Gal 3:24)

III. Law Expressed (2 Cor 3:6)
A. Letter of Law
1. Written in Stone (Ex 31:18)
2. Kills - trust in performing
B. Law Fulfilled
1. Jesus (Mat 5:17)
2. Disciples (Rom 13:10, Gal 5:14)
C. Spirit of Law
1. Written in Heart (2 Cor 3:3)
2. Gives Life -- dwells in us (Rom 8:2)

Conclusion:  The character of God dwells in the
Christian by the redemptive sacrifice of  Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit -- the Christian reflects that
character by living by the spirit of the law.
